How safe is our food now days?

I just watched a movie called Food Inc. and saw how some
companies are controlled by the government. Plus I watched
another film called Super Size me. How these fast food
resturants get our attention and how it is affecting our health.
For real where I live, I can't eat resturant food because of
my stomach problems. Like if I want a hamburger, I have
to fix it at home. Now days I can't eat a drop of meat and
have to be vegeterian from now on. So I take mushrooms
and make burger with them especially portabellas.
Let me know what you think.

I became a vegetarian in 1970, and see you making a wrong move.
If you're leaving one kind of diet behind,
trying to find substitutes to make the same kind of menu is going to be self-defeating.
I use broccoli stem slices or water chestnuts as a meat substitute, in stir fries.
Baby clams are nice for other recipes.
Large spore balls are almost steak-like in texture, and cheaper than portabellas.
Getting out to find your food helps with exercise and eating them alive,
which is a better benefit than driving and shopping and cooking.
I'm just glad to hear you're not out there invading abandoned homes,
looking in left-behind gardens to bump up your fruit and vegetable intake.

Hey! That's easier to do that at Walmart than a left behind garden. Just joking.
How can you help me out? I spend the whole day yesterday with an irritable
stomach. I tried everything to stop it from feeling queezy. The only thing that
helped was a salad made with white reddishes and Chinese cabbage with a home
made salad dressing of vinegar and grapeseed oil. Unusual hugh? My protein
comes from cashews and picstasios. Sorry I can't spell too good without a
speller. Before I started such a diet, I was horrorfied when my husband got
sick on a piece of Boston butt roast. I won't touch meat since then and that
was last month. So I'm still new to this new meatless diet and I love the
way I feel much better. The one thing I can cross off my list is oatmeal and
pinto beans. They leave me feeling nauseaous if not fixed right.

I am sure you are aware Judy that a major cause of IBS is chocolate, particularly milk chocolate. We have a problem over here with countries such a France, buying rubbish from places like China, then repackaging them and selling them to us as produced in France. Who only knows what they contain. The British farmers are fighting back with a red tractor label, which shows that the food was actually produced over here. We have just finished off the last of the Welsh lamb. They are only fed on grass, and boy does it taste good. We try and buy organic food, but it can be very expensive, so it is not always possible.

I think a lot of "organic" food is a con, they may use little or no chemical fertilisers or pest control, but they still grow the same tasteless varieties, bred for looks and heavy cropping at the expense of taste and nutrition.

As they don't have to spend so much on pest control and other chemicals, why do they need to charge so much more for the produce?

[tongue in cheek]
With enforced birth control - limiting the size of families - there would be less need to produce such large quantities of food, so we might be able to get back to producing food that tastes as it should at a sensible cost.[/tongue in cheek]

Also the birth control could be made selective, such that moronic thugs and vandals and benefit scroungers are sterilised (maybe overpaid sports and media personalities too).

World problems solved while you wait!

My idea of an organic food is the homemade garden you have in the back yard.
Not something you get at the grocery store or walmart. Farmer's markets are
good if you keep your eyes and ears open to what the merchants are saying.
If the merchant says that they ordered the veggies and not grow them, don't
buy it. Just be aware of everything. If you go to buy meat of any kind pick
up the package to see if it smells and check the color to see if the beef has a
clean red color with a little marble in it and not gray. Fish is always easy to
check if it's fresh or not! It stinks when it's spoiled. Fruits and veggies are
the same way. You can tell when a fruit or veggie isn't fresh too.
As for John, you talk about foods such as baby clams. In my neck of the
woods finding such a delicy is impossible. So I have to choose nuts in
place of meat as a vegetarian.

Over here, across the pond, we have the dreaded "Pink Slime" that is added to our beef products. The USDA allows it as the "slime" is ground up leftovers (floor scraps that haven't hit the floor yet) from trimming meat cuts. We have gotten extremely picky about from whom or where we buy our beef these days, and only buy from merchants that don't use the pink slime as part of their composition of preparing and butchering meats.

We don't eat that much meat anyway ... mostly chicken and fish. I love salads, especially tomatoes.

I usually use ginger tea that I make at home with honey and use aloe to
ease the heartburn along with it.

Thought this was a good place to copy this. We have a little red tractor sign on food grow or raised in this country but the information about bar cades may be of interest to members alll over the world particulalrly if they trade with China. A few years ago the French were buying chickens from China, repackaging them and selling them as French produce.

You might want to take this with you when shopping.

It's worth printing this and cutting it out to have in your wallet or purse. Let's stop the outsourcing of our jobs.

ALWAYS READ THE LABELS ON THE FOODS YOU BUY-- NO MATTER WHAT THE FRONT OF THE BOX OR PACKAGE SAYS, TURN IT OVER AND READ THE BACK---CAREFULLY!

With all the food and pet products now coming from China , it is best to make sure you read label at the grocery store and especially Tesco / Asda when buying food products.

Many products no longer show where they were made, only give where the distributor is located. It is important to read the bar code to track it's origin. How to read Bar Codes .... Interesting!

This may be useful to know when grocery shopping, if it's a concern to you.

GREATWAY TO"BUY BRITISH " AND NOT FROMCHINA!!

GetInline.aspx

The whole world is concerned about China-made "black hearted goods".
Can you differentiate which one is made in Taiwan or China ?

If the first 3 digits of the barcode are
690691 or 692, the product is MADE IN CHINA.

471
is Made in Taiwan .

This is our right to know, but the government and related departments never educate the public, therefore, we have to RESCUE ourselves.

Nowadays, Chinese businessmen know that consumers do not prefer products "MADE IN CHINA ", so they don't show from which country it is made.

However, you may now refer to the barcode - remember if the first 3 digits are:

690-692 ... Then it is MADE IN CHINA
00 - 09
... USA & CANADA
30 - 37
FRANCE
40 - 44 GERMANY
471 .... Taiwan
49
... JAPAN
50 ... UK

BUY
'BRITISH' by watching for "50" at the beginning of the number.

We need every boost we can get! Pass this on to everybody on your E-Mail Contact List!!

The only thing we get that is really Brittish is people, certain cars like
the Rolls Royce, and Cooper cars. The food when I read the label is
made somewhere like Indiana or Tennessee. Bummer!

I am sure that a lot of the food we get here is not too good. You can get some meat in one place that is a totally different colour in another place. I like fresh food, especially going to a farm or garden where I can pick my own. Too many things are added to food nowadays, just to make them last a little longer.

Have you heard about the meat machine.
They're saying in three years people will be able to use proteins and other organic ingredients,
and use a microwave sized machine to convert it to meat, indistinguishable from, uh, bone-grown.

Oh no, lab-grown meat - GetMeowtaHere - It'll ne'er supplant Kobe, Argentinian, or Longhorn on-the-hoof........

Frightening is it not. We eat pure fresh food when we can and are fussy the rest of the time. Marks and Spencer have a policy of never selling genetically altered food. They an be a little more expensive than some places but there is no wastage so it balances out.
