What jazz have you been listening to today?

I have had some success by opening the cassette and carefully smoothing the tape before re-assembling it. I then manually wind and then re=wind, using a pencil to turn the capstan. The next time you play it make sure you are riping it, just incase you only get one chance. My sympahy, after finding such a treasure for that to happen. Let me know how you get on

Raises an interesting point teddy what is the difference between West and East coast jazz?? is East cooler?

I've always had the impression West coast is mostly nearer to cool, and east coast a bit closer to mainstream. However there are probably quite a few exceptions to those rules.

carly simon-moonlight serenade- columbia cd.this isnt jazz, but it is excellent. there are a lot of cds by pop singers singing standards just lately and this is probably the best one i have heard. gord

I've been getting into "Indestructible" and "Mosaic" by Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers. Also listened to " Doin' The Thing" by Horace Silver and his group at the Village Gate. :cool:

A Love Supreme, John Coltrane,

Part 1, Acknowledgement had me wondering where it was going.

Part2, Resolution, after 2-3 minutes I decided to call it a day, apart from a repetitive rhythm which did form an anchor point I was completely lost, what emerged from the bell of Coltrane’s sax was beyond me, a weak rhythm at best and no melody that I could recognise I think there was structure but again to me it was obscure.
I realise that the problem lies with me as he is rated very highly it does make me wonder about music in general which seems to have gone its own sweet way but left an awful lot of music lovers bewildered, Classical has done the same, I am told that it is a natural progression of a dynamic art form. well perhaps so ???????????

Must admit to similar feelings Colin, I'm not that familiar with Coltrane, don't have any of his albums, probably cos I wasn't attracted to his music when I first heard it many moons ago, so long I couldn't recall any.

For me, as I've said before, music must be tuneful above all else, Jazz also implies rythm/beat/swing (which ever term you like to give it)

There are some classical composers whose music is so repetitive sounding that I could not differentiate between pieces except maybe for the addition of a different instrument, other classical and some jazz performers to my ears only produce noise. One could almost say that very little music worthy of being so called has been written since the 1980s or before.

It is my second attempt to appreciate him lol another failure

It took me about 20 years to accept Rachmaninov and that was a struggle I must admit he does not feature on my frequently played list

I don't know if this work would be considered as "jazz" per se, but I have been listening and really getting into the soundtrack to the Mick Jagger movie "Performance". This offers some very interesting and different styles of music; Ry Cooder is simply awesome on slide guitar :cool:. Also check him out on "Buenavista Social Club"; he is simply a fantastic musician.

Just catching up with this thread as I have been busy electrocuting myself and sawing my fingers of (I call it DIY). West Coast or East Coast I am not qualified to know the answer Colin. Steve I was given a copy of BVSC some years ago and still love it Ry Cooder deserves a medal for what he did for Cuban music and yes I to love his slide guitar work.

Today - Revisiting Misery and the Blues, Brilliant. My luch hour, generally spent at my desk is usually the time I am able to listen to some jazz.
