Rating The Jazz Piece Above Me

On our sister forum, "Talk Classical" I noticed a thread started by one of its members recently with the above title, and it causes a lot of participation and sharing among the members. How it works is one puts forth a jazz piece from you tube or another accessible link, and the next poster rates it on a scale of 1-10 with a brief reason {s} why he or she came to that rating. Then, he or she posts a jazz piece for the next poster to review and so on and so on.

Like its laid back style like John said. He is usually a bit busy and loud for me. 7/10 I could listen to more in this vein.

steve,this is a great thread. all of coltranes work in my opinion is superb, apart from a few impulse recordings.this is no exception, a definate 10.i must buy this album.
above is my choice to be judged.johnny hodges,harry edison,les spann, al hall, jo jones and duke ellington. take note of dukes solo it always knocks me out. gord

hi teddy,i had the feeling big t was coming from you. this of course is from the album T FOR TROMBONE, a jazz classic. timeless music from a jazz master, i can only give it a10.

Hi Teddy. Hope you are feeling well. I'm glad you like this idea; I just wish I could claim to have thought of it on my own, but I didn't. Regardless, I believe that it will increase participation and opinion sharing amongst all of my fellow jazz enthusiasts.. It seems to be working quite well indeed over on our sister forum, "Talk Classical."

Gord, that piece really "rocks" {excuse the mixed allusion here, please}. I'd give it an 8.5/10. I really enjoyed the trumpet player {"Sweets" Edison} and the Duke's excellent chordal vamping. Do you know who the drummer is? I thought he really kicked it up a notch as well. The one instrument that I really felt detracted from the overall power and drive of this piece was the electric guitar; I just don't feel it belongs in jazz {Dorsetmike will be upset with me for this opinion, I know}.

(A lot of people new to jazz may not realise how influential a figure Benny Carter was. and not only a top sax player but excellent on trumpet as well)

Now my comments:
1. teddy - You know how much I rate Big T - 9/10
2. Gord - Hodges is a great favourite of mine(I have a lot of his stuff) - 8.5/10
3. Mike. Benny G. was so influential in my early jazz listening (Especially the trio and Quart.)the 1938 concert still gets a regular listen from me, - 9/10

monty python used to say, and now for something completely different. above is sun ra and the old standard, stars fell on alabama. a critic once called sun ras music demented jazz, a perfect description. but this is as close to mainsteam jazz that sun ra ever came. i know some of you will hate this, and give it a 0 out of 10.i think it has a lot going for it,a monkish feel about it, and it certainly has a lot of charm. let me hear how you feel, good or bad. gord

Hi Gord. I must say that Sun Ra's version is--if nothing else--"different", to say the least. To me, parts of it sounded like someone was playing a kazoo instead of the sax. It had the sound of the old Ebbets Field in Brooklyn when the fans would start playing in their "band"{I've forgotten the quaint name which they used for their group}. I'm also not much for vocals in my jazz, unless it's Satchmo or Billie Holiday. So overall, I would rate this piece a 6/10 for its uniqueness.

I had never heard of the man but I see nothing wrong with it admittedly I have heard only the first 4 min but will d/l I give it 8/10

steve, actually i think the cannonball adderley version is far superior to the sun ra. i would have to give it 9 out of 10. gord

steve, bluette, i think brubeck can do no wrong 8 out of 10
mike,i believe this is goodmans british band.goodman always had good swingin bands,and this one is no exception, excellent 9 out of10

hi colin, sun ra usually plays very weird music, iam not sure if it jazz or not. but at times it is quite interesting. gord
