I suppose to the uninitited like me there re similarities between the instruments. I would not be able to tell the diference with my eyes closed. Its a sweet sound he produces whatever it is.

How about a very small Pocket Trumpet as played by Don Cherry. Thinner tone I would say but sometimes sounds just like a normal trumpet.

Then there is the jazz trombonist Steve Turre who quite impressive playing Conch Shells (large sea shells) He is worth checking out on You Tube. I am sorry but being new here I haven't mastered the art of transferring video clips!!!!

If an instrument is played well it can be hard to tell which instrument it is [by this I mean brass to brass wind to wind string to string] I heard Garry Carr ( Double Bass) playing on steam radio (without knowing at the time who it was) and I thought it was a Cello in the low register, the same applies to Brass, a Trombone in high register can sound very like a trumpet in low register. regarding video clips just check out FAQ when you have a bit of spare time. Regards Colin :)

@ DorsetMike, That's a really great clip of an excellent performance by both Hancock and Cherry! The Esbjorn Svensson Trio also do an excellent cover of this tune as well; of course, Monk himself doing the original version isn't too shabby either!

An unusual combination featuring Sam Pilafian of the Canadian Brass on Tuba and Gabe Hall-Rodrigues on Accordion with Sweet Georgia Brown.

Not bad at all GB, I also had a look at Funkafried that was amazing. Thanks

According to the comments on the video of Daniel Waples playing one in Karl Johanes Gate in Oslo it is called a PANArt Hang manufactured on a limited basis by a company in Switzerland. On this video Daniel turns the instrument over to achieve a different tone. Very interesting and pleasant sounding rhythm instrument.
